Building Bridges, Strengthening Lives

Community settlement support

Settlement & Integration Support

Arriving in a new country brings immense challenges. The Sudanese Canadian Church of British Columbia walks alongside newcomers during their settlement journey. We provide practical support including language assistance, navigating government services, finding employment, securing housing, and understanding the Canadian education system.

Our community members who have successfully navigated this journey serve as mentors and guides for those just arriving. Through one-on-one support, group workshops, and resource referrals, we help newcomers build the foundations for a successful life in Canada while maintaining their cultural identity and dignity.

Our settlement support includes:

  • Language support and ESL referrals
  • Employment guidance and resume workshops
  • Housing assistance and orientation
  • Education system navigation
  • Government services orientation
  • Mentorship programs for new arrivals

Cultural Preservation & Events

Our cultural programs celebrate the rich heritage of the Sudanese people while fostering cross-cultural understanding. We organize traditional music and dance performances, Sudanese cuisine gatherings, storytelling evenings, and cultural awareness events that bring together Sudanese Canadians and the broader New Westminster community.

These events help preserve our traditions for future generations while building bridges of understanding with our Canadian neighbors. Through cultural exchange, we demonstrate the beauty and richness of Sudanese heritage and create opportunities for meaningful cross-cultural connections.

Our cultural programs include:

  • Cultural festivals and heritage celebrations
  • Traditional music and dance performances
  • Sudanese cuisine events and cooking classes
  • Storytelling and oral history preservation
  • Intergenerational cultural education
  • Cross-cultural community events

Family Support Services

Strong families build strong communities. We offer family counseling referrals, parenting workshops tailored to the unique challenges of raising children in a cross-cultural environment, and support groups for families dealing with the effects of displacement and separation.

Our goal is to strengthen family bonds and ensure every family in our community has the resources they need to thrive. We understand that the journey of immigration can place unique pressures on family relationships, and we are committed to providing compassionate support that honors both Sudanese family values and the realities of life in Canada.

Community Partnerships

We believe in the power of collaboration. The Sudanese Canadian Church of British Columbia works alongside several organizations to maximize the impact of our community services.

Our partnerships include collaboration with MOSAIC BC, which provides resettlement and integration assistance for newcomers; the Sudanese Canadian Society of British Columbia, which supports the social and economic development of the Sudanese community; and the Asian and Multicultural Ministries in Canada (AMMiC), which connects us to a nationwide network of multicultural faith communities. Together with local organizations, government agencies, and community groups, we work to ensure that every Sudanese Canadian in British Columbia has access to the support and resources they need to thrive.
